Three CDs in this box set. The first is the same as the "normal" CD. Secondly a "Songs version. This is much like the Vinyl version, but longer (the LP tracls had to be edited to fit time constraints) and in a different order - which, of course, produces a different narrative. Thridly a "retro" version. This is a thirty minute, amost entirle instrumental, continuous piece, which mirrors a work-in-progress CD which I took with me to Japan in September 2013 and from which, eventually, emerged, the whole idea of continuous work. A couple of musical fragments which didn't make it onto the final recordings are also present here. Two 16-page booklets give full lyricxs for each version and an explanatroy blurb runs across the back of the three individual CD booklets.

Although there can never be a definitive PH album, in many ways, this one encapsulates the best aspects of his previous work.

Lyrically, there's the ambiguous 'show don't tell' narrative seen in past songs such as 'Ysabel's Dance' and 'Curtains'. Vocally, Hammill sounds at times as vibrant, versatile and 'angsty' as he does live. The music is layered with shades of light and dark (there's a mix of rock, electronica, even jazz going on in there). It has the musical innovation of early VdGG, the experimentalism of his late 70's / early 80's solo work and the sonic brilliance of his recent solo albums (over the years, Hammill has become a fantastic studio engineer/producer/mixer).

This album (I got the three CD version from Burning Shed) is brilliant and proves that, unlike most artist, who seem to lose their artistic drive and ambition over time, Hammill continues to push himself and in the process, continues to challenge his audience with what has always been, very demanding music. As ever, it's no good sticking this on and half listening to it whilst doing the ironing /driving / reading the paper. It demands your full attention. Its nuances and subtleties emerge gradually, with repeated listens, when you're in the mood (which in my case, isn't all of the time). The three disc version gives you effectively three different 'director's cuts' of the same material. It's a hugely original idea. The single disc (disc 1 in the triple set) is the cut-up 'cinematic' version. Disc 2 (also the version released on vinyl) is the same material in its original 'song' format (although don't expect a standard verse-chorus-verse structure). The third disc has a recut instrumental mix of most of the source material. The beauty of this, as with PH's other work, is that it will be seen (and liked) differently by different PH fans and probably won't be appreciated until some time after the initial listen(s).
