This extensive 35 track compilation is from one of rockabilly's finest exponents, Glen Glenn. It features many never before released tracks and rare acetate versions alongside the highly-acclaimed Era and Dore sides…

It was in February 1977, in the hallowed offices of Peer-Southern Music, when the pounding of heavy footsteps up many flights of stone stairs, announced the breathless arrival of an exceedingly sweaty Graham Wood clutching a battered briefcase filled to capacity with Master Tapes. Graham had no means of playing the 10 1/2" NAB spools, so I had arranged for him to play them at the Southern Offices. Turning on those tapes was a revelation, as these were copymasters of the original Glen Glenn recording sessions made for Era Records in 1957/8 and sent across by Herb Newman, the company President. Few people in Europe had heard Glen's recordings at this time and, suffice to say, that Graham and myself were instant converts to the classic Rockabilly sound of songs like 'Everybody's Movin' and 'I'm Glad My Baby's Gone Away'. The original released Era recordings were licensed by Ace Records and 'Hollywood Rock 'n' Roll has become one of the best selling Rockabilly/Rock 'n' Roll products of all time.

Born Glen Troutman in October 1934 in Joplin Missouri, Glen's family soon moved to California settling in San Dimas in 1947. A Martin D28 followed, when Glen was nearly 16 after which he teamed up with high school chum Gary Lambert, who was already an accomplished guitar player specialising in the Chet Atkins style of playing. A weekly Sunday visit to the Squeakin' Deacon Show at Riverside Rancho became one of life's necessities until finally Glen and Gary were featured singing 'Dim Lights Thick Smoke' a Joe Maphis classic, after which local bookings began to mushroom for the duo, who were booked out as 'the Missouri Mountain Boys'. Fred Maddox, ace bass slapper for the Maddox Brothers & Rose, suggested Glen should start to Rock a little bit more like the Memphis Boy - Elvis Presley. Glen took the advice and during his first preserved radio sessions (albeit somewhat scratchy!) from 1955, included 'That's Alright Mama' and some 'Hot' versions of 'Jack & Jill Boogie' and 'John Henry'. Sadly, the original acetates of these Radio Shows are in very poor condition and only 8 of the 14 songs recorded are featured here. Scratches and pops there are, but at least we can now hear something from these first sessions, which show how good Glen & Gary were already in their career.

In 1956, Glen went home to Missouri as part of a tour with his cousin, Porter Wagoner and it seems to be this tour which finally set Glen on the Rock 'n' Roll Glory Trail. On this CD you can hear Porter introducing Glen for 'There She Goes'. September 1956 saw Glen in the Garrison Studios, Long Beach, where he recorded one of the finest Country Music sessions. With the legendary Ralph Mooney on Steel Guitar, Glen recorded four superb 1950's style Country Music classics, which are released here for the first time. Late 1956 saw Glen joining the Maddox Brothers & Rose Band, though
Rose was to leave shortly after to pursue a solo career. Much touring followed, which was to give Glen invaluable experience for the future. The Maddoxes can be heard here working with 'Glen' on 'Baby Let's Play House/More & More/Honey Don't', as well as being featured at the end of the CD with 'Red Headed Stranger' and a very short refrain of 'Show Me The Way To Go Home'. The version of 'Baby Let's Play House' is wonderfully excessive with all stops being pulled out and Fred's bass mashing the track along.

Glen had known Eddie Cochran since 1954 and, consequently came to know Connie 'Guybo' Smith, Cochran's bass player, who agreed to play with Glen and Gay on a sharing basis with Cochran. Joe O'Dell came in on drums and the classic rockabilly combo was formed which was to record the Era material at Goldstar. Strangely the Rockabilly records did not sell too well, but pretty pop rocker 'Laurie Ann' did give Glen a taste of the Billboard Charts before Uncle Sam knocked on his door and spirited him away to the Special Service in the U.S. Army, where he was able to carry on performing in Japan, Korea and Hawaii, but, of course, unable to promote any records.

While in the Services, Lew Bedell had split from Herb Newman at Era to form his own label - Dore Records - and took with him, Glen. Glen's Dore recordings never caught fire like the Era recordings and it was clear that a complete change of direction would.be needed to bring Glen back on track! That change took place when Glen married Mary in 1961 and took on the responsibility of family life. His interest in the business side of music declined, while the slog of touring also began to lose it's appeal and around 1964, Glen retired from the business.

The Ace release of Glen's Era masters certainly fired up a new generation of Rockabilly fans with Glen finally coming to Europe in 1987 to play shows with Rose Maddox and myself. Here we have a superb record of Glen's musical roots, which lead up to the recording of those great tracks - 'Live' Radio & TV shows, which Glen did on a regular basis, working regularly with many of the Country Music stars of the day - some fine song Demos, such as 'One More Time' - the 1956 Garrison studio session with Ralph Mooney - the original Radio sessions as the Missouri Mountain Boys - instrumentals featuring the nimble fingered dexterity of Gary Lambert and a superb unissued alternate take of 'Everybody's Movin' taken at a slower pace from the released session and bursting with raw energy. Perhaps in years to come, this CD will be looked upon in a historical light as a tribute to a fine Missouri Rockabilly - Glen Glenn.

    – Dave Travis, August 1993

While he never gained the same fame and public recognition as such fellow West Coast rockabilly pioneers as Eddie Cochran and Ricky Nelson, Glen Glenn's talent far outweighed his luck in the music business, and his classic sides have become the stuff of legend among rockabilly fans as well as such roots rock giants as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan, all of whom have covered his tunes on-stage.
