At this 1974 concert baritonist Gerry Mulligan and trumpeter Chet Baker had one of their very rare reunions; it would be only the second and final time that they recorded together after Mulligan's original quartet broke up in 1953. Oddly enough, a fairly contemporary rhythm section was used (keyboardist Bob James, vibraphonist Dave Samuels, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Harvey Mason, and in one of his first recordings, guitarist John Scofield). However, some of the old magic was still there between the horns, and in addition to two of Mulligan's newer tunes, this set (the first of two volumes) also includes fresh versions of "Line for Lyons" and "My Funny Valentine."
Fun Fact: Legendary saxophonist Stan Getz also performed during this concert, but does not appear on the recording.

Pioneers of West Coast cool jazz, Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan made their Carnegie Hall debuts together on March 12, 1955, on a bill that included the Dave Brubeck Quartet. The pair had not performed together, however, in more than a decade when they arrived at Carnegie Hall on November 24, 1974. This was also only the second—and final—time that Baker and Mulligan recorded together since the original "pianoless" quartet broke up in 1953.

Chet Baker opened the concert, followed by a Gerry Mulligan set. In fact, they performed together on only three tunes that night: "Line for Lyons," "Bernie's Tune", and "My Funny Valentine." Although they do not appear on the recording, Baker and Mulligan were joined by Stan Getz and Buddy Rich to close out the evening.

Gerry Mulligan continued to be a Carnegie Hall regular, performing a further 24 concerts here through 1994 before his death two years later. Baker, on the other hand, performed only once more—in November 1975—before his death in 1988.
