David Grubbs & Jim O'Rourke’s long-dormant Gastr Del Sol returns with a first “new” release in 25 years, an epic 3LP/2CD box set collecting previously unreleased recordings and rarities influenced by Derek Bailey’s free improv as much as hallowed jazz staples and musique concrète, like some irresistible force ploughing through the increasingly approachable, you might even say polite, output of their post rock contemporaries back in the late 90’s. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it sounds better now than ever, too.

Before Gastr Del Sol there was Bastro, David Grubbs' experimental post-hardcore band that released three influential, genre-bending albums before mutating into Gastr Del Sol. Grubbs had picked up percussionist John McEntire and bassist Bundy K. Brown along the way, and the trio became progressively more confounding, turning their songs into quiet, shimmering meditations. The first Gastr Del Sol album 'The Serpentine Similar', from 1993, started life as a Bastro record, and when McEntire and Brown split off to form Tortoise, Grubbs invited Jim O'Rourke into the fold, who helped push the band into ever-odder directions. Although they were short-lived, effectively splitting up in 1998, the duo left an indelible mark on post-rock and beyond. Not only were they at the dead centre of Chicago's sprawling, influential scene, they also helped disrupt the formula, not so much interested in the quiet-loud ideal, or overdriven noodling, preferring instead to fold in techniques cribbed from musique concrète and Derek Bailey’s free improv.

'We Have Dozens of Titles' fills in a few of the gaps in their catalogue, and following a period of 25 years where the band lay dormant, the duo finally rifled through their unreleased recordings, examining the material to see how well it stacked against their rigorous studio takes. They eventually stumbled on the motherlode, a lengthy CBC recording of O'Rourke and Grubbs at Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville in 1997, the last time the duo performed as Gastr Del Sol, no less.

The album kicks off with an ethereal early version of 'Camoufleur' opener 'The Seasons Reverse' that dispenses with the drums and the vocals, stretching it out to almost eight minutes. With Grubbs on guitar, O'Rourke commands electronics, adding a rhythmic section that fills out those memorable organ fanfares and piano. The vocals have also been removed on the live version of 'Blues Subtitled No Sense of Wonder', taking on a more meditative quality that recalls Alice Coltrane with the organ thrust into the foreground over unstable, swirling oscillations.

They finish the set with a billowing version of 'Onion Orange', and it's a real revelation, with O'Rourke adding glistening synth waves to David’s knotty guitar. The resulting, celestial 18-minute jam is worth the asking price alone, hinting at what we would come to expect from both artists later on - abstract, airy synths from O'Rourke and thoughtful, slow-moving axe work from Grubbs. Elsewhere, there's a pared down version of 'Ursus Arctos Wonderfilis' from 'The Serpentine Similar', and an extended interpretation of 'Dictionary of Handwriting' from 1994's 'Mirror Repair', with O'Rourke and Grubbs going head-to-head on guitar.

To fill in the gaps, Gastr also tie up some of the crucial additional threads that sit on the periphery of their canon. The 1995-released oddity 'The Harp Factory On Lake Street' is the most crucial of these, a 17-minute avant-classical experiment that swells Grubbs and O'Rourke's vision with trumpet, cello, trombone, violin, clarinet and synth from none other than John McEntire. Then there's the entire '20 Songs Less' 7" presented as a single track, 'Quietly Approaching' from 1995 comp 'Red Hot + Bothered', a bizarre Günter Müller collaboration 'Dead Cats In A Foghorn', avant Christmas carol 'The Bells of St. Mary's', and 'The Japanese Room At La Pagode' from the duo's iconic split with Tony Conrad. Every track's been either mastered or remastered by Jim O'Rourke, so it all sounds better than ever too.
