Official Release #97. Frank Zappa produced a television program aired by KCET in Los Angeles in 1974, featuring a sextet that included keyboardist George Duke and the zany saxophonist and singer Napoleon Murphy Brock. This bootleg opens with a blistering medley of "The Dog Breath Variations" and "Uncle Meat," followed by a rather overly long "Florentine Pogen." Zappa offhandedly ends "Stink-Foot" with the comment of "Oh, that's enough of that," before launching into one of his best pieces of the 1970s, "Inca Roads"; this version contains a particularly potent Zappa guitar solo and Duke's excellent keyboard work, too, but it is also contains a sudden fadeout near its conclusion. The rather obscure and very brief "Honey, Honey" is almost an afterthought as he wraps the program with two more brief songs. While the sound is mono, it is at least very clear and not plagued with the addition of outside noise. Because this TV program was only broadcast in Los Angeles and never commercially issued, it is a collectable. But since there are better versions of all the important songs that appeared on this bootleg on his legitimate recordings, this record is of interest primarily to the die-hard completist Zappa fan.

Another fine release from the Zappa Family Trust, this soundtrack for the movie (A Token of His Extreme - an excellent, not to be missed, glimpse at how good this band and performance was) is top quality FZ - from my favorite era/band of his - recorded (but apparently not domestically broadcast) as part of a special concert on 8/27/74, at the studios of KCET in LA.
As the liner notes note, these are also pretty much (with small additions/omissions) the same performances as released earlier on The Dub Room Special, but in "an entirely different mix." Different enough to be worth getting - especially the way the drums/percussion really jump out as being the heart of Zappa's music, as well as the omission of "Stevie's Spanking" and "Easy Meat" from The Palladium 1981 NYC Halloween show, which is just fine by me, plus the addition of "Oh No/Son of Orange County/More Trouble Everyday" which is even better.
Besides being more live music from one of the best bands he ever assembled (the same as on the great You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore - Vol. 2), the highlights here, for me, are his innovative extended guitar soloing on Montana, Florentine Pogen, Stink Foot, Pygmy Twylyte, Inca Roads, Son of Orange County and More Trouble Every Day.
My only (very minor) complaint is that the liner notes are pretty sparse, with the printed track numbers not matching those on the actual disc. Overall though, both the performances and sound quality are excellent (perhaps even tightened up a bit due to the more formal TV studio venue). Yet even this slightly more "normalized" performance couldn't get any airtime on mid-70's American TV (although it did play in Europe). Understandably it must have been frustrating for FZ to be continually dismissed and disregarded (even as he pushed conventions to the limit….). Finally it seems (40 years later!) Zappa can be appreciated for what he did as a composer-musician-bandleader-performer, and not just rejected for how he appeared… (Oh, and btw for a MUCH cheaper NEW copy, try Zappa's Barfko Swill website while they've still got 'em.)
