Duane Eddy is a Grammy Award-winning American guitarist. In the late 1950s and early 1960s he had a string of hit records, produced by Lee Hazlewood, which were noted for their characteristically "twangy" sound, including "Rebel Rouser", "Peter Gunn", and "Because They're Young". He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

You're holding in your hand a very rare collection of Duane Eddy's work from 1962-1965 - the RCA years. The 20 tracks here have been chosen to show as many sides of his multi-faceted talent as possible: there are fast and slow numbers, happy and sad ones, hard and soft ones. There are single releases (track 3 to 12) and rare album cuts - none of them released on CD ever before. "Rebel Rouser" is a reworked version of his first worldwide smash. All tracks have been taken from the Original RCA master tapes; some are in Mono (track 3 to 12), some in Stereo for the first time ever (track 18 to 20). We especially took care not to overlap with Dunne's original albums.

Duane Eddy was born in Corning, New York, on April 26, 1938. At the age of thirteen, he and his family moved to Coolidge, Arizona. For eight years he had already played the guitar, as he was introduced to this instrument at age five by his father, an amateur guitarist. After leaving highschool in 1954 he played at local clubs and dances. Soon after he met rockabilly pianist/guitarist Al Casey and singer/composer/producer Lee Hazlewood, who at this time was a DJ at a local radio station in Phoenix, Arizona. For a while Duane played rhythm guitar in the group of Al Casey. They were touring in California and besides he seriously studied guitar with jazz musician Jimmy Wybele. Together with Lee Hazlewood he developed his unique guitar style by playing the melody on the bottom strings instead of on the top strings to produce a deep twangy sound. He and Hazlewood quickly recognized its commercial potential and a composition by Lee and Duane called "Moovin' 'n' Groovin'" was recorded in Hazlewood's studio in Phoenix. They were shopping around for a recording contract but most of the record companies concentrated on Rock'n'Roll singers. It was the hightime for Elvis and others, and the king of guitar was without doubt Chet Atkins. Duane then formed a recording group, which he named The Rebels. They consisted of Al Casey (piano), Buddy Wheeler (bass), Steve Douglas (sax), Dorky Casey (rhythm guitar) and Mike Bermani (drums). Over the years the personnel changed and it is interesting to note that some famous musicians like Jim Horn or Larry Knechtel (Bread) played once in Duane's band. His second single "Rebel Rouser" was an instant success in 1958. Over a million copies were sold. In 1959 "Cashbox" awarded him as "Outstanding Instrumentalist", in 1960 he was voted 'Top World Personality" by England's "New Musical Express" - ahead of Elvis! Finally in 1961 he signed with RCA, and more hits stormed up the US charts like "Deep In The Heart Of Texas" - and that's how our collection starts. So lean back and enjoy 20 hits and rarities of Duane's twangin' guitar!
