After four excellent Riverside albums (all reissued in the OJC series) that saw Don Friedman moving ever more emphatically into free areas, the pianist took the full plunge. He succeeded Paul Bley in Jimmy Giuffre's innovative group and formed a quartet with Attila Zoller, the talented Hungarian guitarist Friedman had met earlier in Herbie Mann's band. After successful appearances in Europe and at Newport, Friedman and Zoller recorded this stunning program with the brilliant assistance of two other giants, Richard Davis and Joe Chambers. The diverse compositions employ collective improvisation, tone rows, and open structures as well as examples of chordal and modal forms, and retain a melodic clarity and a lithe propulsion not always associated with the avant-garde. Metamorphosis, while shamefully ignored upon its release, has survived as one of the most visionary and eloquent sessions of its day. Source: concordmusicgroup.com
