    End of status report

This unique multicultural supergroup includes Toumani Diabate (Mali) on kora, Danny Thompson (UK) on bass, and the Gypsy guitar group Ketama from Spain, plus guests. - by by Myles Boisen, AMG

In October, 1987, Ketama group played five dates in London. At a party the heard Toumani Diabate play the kora. A few days later, half-Spanish, Mandinka-speaking musicologist Lucy Duran invited all concerned for an 'African Paella'. Toumani had often tried playing the kora with non-traditional combinations of musicians, but the mixture had never been totally successful until that afternoon. In the evening they sprung the new music on an unsuspecting audience at a Spanish club in London. The astonished ovation which greeted their performance decided it - a record had to be made. April in Madrid saw Danny Thompson added on bass. Spanish vocals were added later in Madrid, African vocals courtesy of Mory Kante's group in London. Mario Pacheco and I had always wanted to produce something together. We were privileged to do it on a record where the musicians were constantly regarding each other with surprise, delight and mutual admiration. - by Joe Boyd
