    Recorded over the course of three months in 1962, Coltrane was the first album to showcase what came to be known as the classic John Coltrane Quartet. That group — with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums — established itself in its four years of existence as one of the most influential ensembles in jazz, and one of the most popular as well. Coltrane documents its genesis.

    The first disc of this deluxe reissue consists of the album as originally released. The second contains a wealth of extra material from the Coltrane sessions, including four previously unreleased alternative takes of "Tunji" and one previously unreleased piece, "Not Yet." All the music on both discs has been remastered by the original engineer, Rudy Van Gelder, using better tape sources than any previous edition. (CD cover)
