A rare live set by Cannonball Adderley – unreleased in America at the time, and performed with the style of Cannon's best work for Riverside! The album's very similar to some of the group's best live sets for Riverside – like the San Francisco or other Tokyo recording – done with tracks that are long and a bit stretched out, performed with Nat Adderley on cornet, Joe Zawinul on piano, Vic Gaskin on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums.
Japanese live albums are almost always a delight. Respectful audiences and high-fidelity recording equipment usually combine to make terrific-sounding records of strong, intense performances. Julian "Cannonball" Adderley's fantastic live document In Japan is no exception.
Recorded in August of 1966 in Tokyo, In Japan features the alto saxophonist at the peak of his career. Backed by his best band – cornet player Nat Adderley, electric pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Victor Gaskin, and drummer Roy McCurdy – Adderley runs through a fairly standard set but does so in anything but a workmanlike way. The extended take on "Mercy Mercy Mercy" is perhaps even more fiery than the one that would soon become a Top 20 pop hit. "Work Song" and a swinging "Jive Samba" open and close the show in style, but less familiar tunes like "The Sticks" and "Money in the Pocket" are nearly as memorable.
