The Buttholes' punks-on-acid debut mini-LP owes as much to Captain Beefheart and rockabilly as it does to hardcore punk and thrash, setting Gibby Haynes' processed vocals against a backdrop of skewed, sludgy noise-riffing. Yet at the same time, the songs display a surprisingly melodic, structured sensibility, which draws the listener into the band's decidedly not fake dementia.
