This Ember collection includes Billy Eckstine and His Orchestra's 1944 recordings for Deluxe Records. Eckstine's band featured some of the best sidemen of the big band era – Dizzie Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Sarah Vaughan, Art Blakey, Gene Ammons, Maxine Sullivan, Benny Carter, Oscar Pettiford – and they swung harder than anyone else on numbers like "Good Jelly Blues," "Blowing the Blues Away," and "I Got a Date with Rhythm." Unfortunately, the sound quality hasn't been remastered at all since this same sequence was first reissued (in 1962), and all of this material is also available on the superb 1944-1945 collection. ~ AllMusic Review by John Bush
