Benny Joy, (real name Benjamin Eidson), was born in Atlanta, Georgia on November 5, 1935 and was an American Rockabilly artist most known for his work in the 1950s. Joy wrote and recorded many of his own compositions e.g. 'Crash The Party', 'Cold, Cold Woman', 'She Cryed For Me' and 'Dark Angel'. Recording artists like Marty Robbins, Jackie Wilson, Charlie Rich, Burl Ives, Debbie Reynolds, Johnny Rivers and Carl Smith have recorded his songs. Among Rockabilly collectors Joy's recording of 'Rollin' The Juke Box Rock' is well known. Joy's band was one of the first American rockabilly ensembles to tour Europe. Benny Joy died in 1988.

Benny Joy was not a talent on the order of top rockabilly stars, but he had more going for him than a lot of the obscure singers in the style that have been rediscovered and championed by collectors. The Tampa guitarist and vocalist cut a few rare singles in the late '50s that didn't get anywhere, although he was represented for a time by Platters manager Buck Ram and did some recording in Nashville with session musicians like saxophonist Boots Randolph, guitarist Hank Garland, and drummer Buddy Harman. Although rockabilly was calming down by the late '50s, Joy seemed in no mood to settle down himself, and on numerous sides he sounds like he's about to shout-sing himself hoarse. Joy wrote most of his material, and although he was derivative of such bigger cats as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and others, on his better tracks he projected a straight-to-the-heart-of-the-matter exuberance along the lines of (although, again, not as good as) Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent. Joy was also one of the relatively few minor rock artists to tour Europe in the late '50s – he did so twice, in fact. After parting with Ram, Joy recorded for Decca without success and in the 1960s became a country songwriter, supplying some material for Stonewall Jackson. Like many obscure rockabilly acts, Joy enjoyed renewed appreciation in England after British collectors discovered his work, particularly for his 1958 single "Crash the Party".

Joy only released three singles in the late 1950s (all here), but a bunch of previously unissued material (some without a full band) from the era was scoured up for various reissues in the late 1970s and early 1980s. With the addition of half a dozen more unissued cuts and three instrumental sides by guitarist Big John Taylor (who played with Joy), Crash the Rockabilly Party has 28 cuts from Joy's early years – quite a job, given how little Joy managed to get on the market in the 1950s. Certainly the cuts are rather similar-sounding, and Joy could have really done with a higher grade of material if he had wanted to make the big time. At his best, his all-out enthusiasm conquers the generic tunes, as on "Miss Bobby Sox," "Little Red Book," and "Spin the Bottle." At other times, it's apparent he's trying to follow someone's lead; "Ittie Bittie Everything" is sung as if under instructions to imitate Buddy Holly, for instance, while "Kiss Me" emulates Elvis Presley's ballad style, and "Bundle of Love" sounds like a son of Elvis' "I Got Stung".
