Classical / Symphonies
Karl Böhm's Vienna Philharmonic Beethoven cycle is Deutsche Grammophon's best kept secret. Not only is it the finest complete set of Beethoven symphonies in their catalog, it's also far and away the best recorded, and to make matters even more irresistible, it's also the least expensive (it's available on three "twofer" sets). These performances are typical: weighty, intense, powerful, and magnificently played. Listen especially to the (comparatively) neglected Fourth Symphony: if Böhm doesn't convince you that this is major Beethoven, then no one can.
This is a superb sound recording with Crystal clear sound clarity. Every note stands apart on this recording. Bohm achieves clean & clear phrasing. Employing an unhurried tempo - not too slow - creates a majestic and dramatic sonic account. Nice capturing of strings and cello on this recording. This is arresting stuff. I would also characterize Bohm's interpretation as Meaty - not glossy. This is scruff of the neck stuff as against the glossy Karajan. Instrument differentiation in the sound engineering is superb. Each instrument can be heard translucently. This is also due to the slightly slower tempo by Bohm which allows all the instrument voices to be heard instead of getting squished in the acoustic spectrum. I could hear the woodwinds and lower register instruments clearly. Great organic sound.

Symphony 1 & 2: These Beethoven symphonies spring to life with Bohm's interpretation. Clean, strong, powerful. Boehm's thick and powerful style, make these sometimes considered lightweight symphonies sound very strong, and muscular - far away from feeling lightweight.

Symphony 4: is played at the right tempo - glorious - the reading is so fluid and organic
Symphony 5: Overall slower tempo - gives it weighty dramatic feel. You feel the first movement; you get time to feel it due to slower tempo. I can hear the timpani distinctly while in other recordings, it is heard smudged in. One of the advantages of slower tempi.
This is a 5 star purchase.
