"The Beach Boys In Concert" is a double album of excellent performances of old and new Beach Boys songs in front of enthusiastic crowds on the group's 1972 and 1973 tours. With drummer Dennis Wilson sidelined from his drum set with a broken hand he now freely roamed the stage with a microphone. The fragile peace of the Beach Boys all being in one room at the same time was thrown into chaos each night usually by mid-show. Dennis, often drunk or high, spent the majority of the concerts demanding that people sing along – he would often thrust the microphone into the faces of people in the crowd. As the de facto frontman Mike Love found the unwelcome presence of this loose cannon irritating. Still, whatever drama was playing out on stage every night took a back seat to the one thing the Beach Boys had going for them: their golden song catalog. But that legacy was being tarnished by sloppy singing and playing and infighting amongst the group members on just how many old songs they could stand to play.

Guitarist Carl Wilson was reluctant to watch the group turn into an "oldies" band that just churned out the hits like a jukebox. Mike knew the audience wouldn't stand for long sections of "Sunflower" or "Surf's Up" because he watched helplessly each night as people sat on their hands anytime something new was played. The disagreement over who had the final say on the set list came to a head in 1979 when Carl refused to tour, leaving a newly revived Brian Wilson to sing all of his songs. The 1979 tour was the biggest train wreck ever. Brian, who on a good day could be described as "volatile," was out of tune as he marched through the hit parade. At one memorable show I watched Brian storm off the stage when a song intro was mistimed. The show was stopped until Dennis could beg Brian to return to the stage. It was a sad spectacle. Carl, in the meantime released a solo album that was largely ignored by critics and audiences and performed a few club shows where audience members yelled out Beach Boys song requests (he played only "Long Promised Road" from the back catalog). He returned to the Beach Boys fold with a new appreciation for the power of the hits. The Beach Boys would be a crowd pleasing jukebox in concert from then on.

Compiled from two separate U.S. jaunts in late 1972 and mid-1973, "The Beach Boys In Concert" was initially submitted to Reprise Records as a single live disc and was rejected, before expanding into a double album. The highlights are many but of note is “We Got Love,” a song slated for the "Holland" album but dropped at the last minute. This marks its only official release.

"The Beach Boys In Concert" (Brother/Reprise 2RS 6484) was originally released as a double album on November 19, 1973. It peaked at #25 on the U.S. album charts during a chart stay of 24 weeks.
