This is the excellent, 2025, fifth release by this long running (founded in 1999) Chilean avant-progressive leaning band who are best known for their one release on the AltrOck label. This one sort of straddles the boundary between avant-progressive sounds that they are mostly known for and a more ‘fusion/symphonic’ approach, in line with Happy The Man or French TV 15.

“From Chile, the country that gave us great avant garde/ jazz fusion bands like Fulano, Media Banda, Congreso…and Ábrete Gandul!

SUCIEDAD CONTEMPORÁNEA (CONTEMPORARY FILTHINESS), an entirely instrumental album; their first on the Mexican label, Azafrán Media. Needless to say, we are thrilled with this new release.

For those who have heard Ábrete Gandul, you know their music ranges from a jazz fusion approach to an aggressive Crimson like powerful performance. At some point, the influence of Van del Graaf Generator appears, resulting in a unique sound that will invite the listener to discover new, vibrant, stuff with emphasis in the roughness of the guitar tone and the occasional angularity of the compositions but, wait a minute, the band would never miss the melodic side.

Their music depicts well how aggressive and hectic our world can be and how tough one must be to survive and navigate through it to prosper. Ábrete Gandul's music is powerful, hard-hitting but contains elements of hope and tenderness. Their melodies are well developed and intricate.

The mastering was made by no other but Udi Kooman (Présent, Gong) and the final outcome will be a treat for your ears. A relevant input for the world of Jazz Avant/ R.I.O./ Art-Rock.”
