Young Waters - Young Waters (2018)

Young Waters' self-titled debut album, armed with emotionally powerful vocals, stirring harmonies & lyrical strings, ingeniously blurs the boundaries between the folk and indie genres.

These grand classically influenced, yet unique arrangements are coupled with wide ranging themes, including the questioning of contemporary reality, Theo's personal experiences, and the darker depths of the human mind.

The writing is done by Theo Passingham, but the arrangement is heavily collaborative; there is a joint obsession with finding the most emotive and beautiful way of conveying the songs through harmony, texture, tension and release. They have been compared to the likes of The Incredible String Band, Fairport Convention and Fleet Foxes for their fresh, 21st century take on Folk music. Inspiration comes from [a wide range of contemporary and traditional forms, and also] composers like Philip Glass, John Taverner and Arvo Pärt.

Their debut single and the last song on the album, 'Swimming Pool' is 'a beautiful offering that is pastoral of arrangement and dexterous of lyric' (CLASH). Six tracks from the album were recorded in one day at the legendary Real World Studios, after winning Bath Folk Festival's New Shoots competition and earning themselves a recording session at Peter Gabriel's studio. The other two tracks, Polly Vaughn and Don't Stare at the Sun, were recorded in Norton St Philip Church. Included in the album is a re-imaging of Jesca Hoop's Enemy, of whom the band pays homage to with their dynamic interpretation.

Young Waters is a five-piece band led by Theo Passingham (vocals and guitar) with Kerry Ann Jangle (vocals and percussion), Liam O'Connell (double bass and vocals), Calum Smith (violin) and Rowen Elliot (viola).
