Yes Remixes is a remix album featuring the songs of progressive rock band Yes and was released in 2003. Taking material harking back from 1970's Time and a Word to 1980s Drama, Virgil Howe a.k.a. "The Verge" (and son of Steve Howe) re-imagined Yes's music into a techno context, dramatically altering the band's sound. Although it briefly dented the remix sales charts, the album failed to chart at all in the regular listings.
I bought this CD simply out of curiosity, really to see how Yes’ cryptic time signatures and extended instrumental workouts could possibly be turned into dance remixes. The answer is that little of the music on this CD is dance music. However, it is rather astonishing and has rarely left my car CD player since I bought it.
It’s well known that Yes guitarist Steve Howe’s son Virgil did the remix, what I is less well known is that he didn’t have access to the original tapes and simply sampled the vinyl LPs. This not only lends the sound a warmth (and occasional crackle) that is rather beguiling, it also means that the original tracks are left intact, i.e. when he samples, he samples the whole section and not just the bass or the guitar or whatever. This lends the remixes a high degree of recognition to the avid Yes listener, and prevents the mixes becoming simply ‘bare boned’ dance tracks.
The familiarity of sound, is in fact, wonderfully disorientating if you are familiar with the original songs – you always think you know what’s coming next – and then it doesn’t. The effect is rather like looking at the world through a multi-faceted crystal – all the elements are there but rearranged and refracted in new and wonderful ways.
When Howe does let the funk take over, the effect is stunning. ‘Arriving UFO’, ‘Five Percent For Nothing’ and ‘Siberian Khatru’ would fill the floor at any club (and what a wonderful sight that would be…) and it makes you realise that Yes have always been one of the more rhythmically adventurous prog rock bands. With little change to the original, Steve Howe comes across like a rubber-wristed rhythm guitarist straight out of a Philly soul session. Chris Squire’s bass is brilliantly sampled to provided the floor-shaking root to the project. I suspect that some external drum sounds have been used, but generally to good effect.
Okay, so Yes purists will hate this, but then they seem to hate half the output of the band anyway! If you’ve got a sense of adventure and you recognise the fact that Yes themselves have sanctioned this release – give it a go. It actually enhances the original material as Virgil Howe has the uncanny ability to pick out those little details that give Yes music its unique character.
Finally, if you can enjoy the delightful irony of dancing to ‘Sound Chaser’ then give this a go – if not, well, perhaps you should stop taking life so seriously.Review by Timothy Hooper, Amazon.co.uk
The phrase "unusual listening experience" may be an understatement regarding the 2003 release Yes Remixes. Yes guitarist Steve Howe's son Virgil (aka "the Verge") pulled apart some of the band's lesser-known works, adding trance beats and electronic blurps, in a sense recontextualizing this airy prog rock for the new millennium. While the experiment is well executed, the resulting tracks are not as interesting as the original album tracks, nor as inventive as much of what is being recorded in contemporary electronica, but landing somewhere in the middle of both. The idea is certainly interesting, and there may be no better source material than Yes' spacy, arty, super-prog, but Yes fans will only be inspired to bust out the old LPs, and ravers certainly won't crack open their glow sticks at the first beats of "Starship Trooper."
