The tale of ill-fated Dido and her Aeneas, as recounted by Virgil, fascinated the 18th century English, who saw it as relevant to the royal machinations they had experienced over the previous hundred years. The glorious economy of Purcell's version was never matched, but numerous versions of the setting by famed Italian librettist Pietro Metastasio were performed on London stages. Handel gets top billing in the graphics here, but in fact this Didone Abbandonata is a work by the Italian composer Leonardo Vinci, who died at age 40 in 1730 before his influence was fully appreciated. He was on the stylistic cutting edge, simplifying and honing to directness the ornate opera seria style that Handel, among others, had perfected. Handel's contribution was to revise the work for its London production, a decade after Vinci wrote the work. The added material is not even all by Handel; he incorporated retexted arias by Johann Adolf Hasse, whose style lay somewhere between Vinci's and his own. His aim was not only to improve on Vinci but to juggle the requirements of the various singers he had to work with. He had two prima donnas, and the result here is a female Dido (Didone) and Aenes (Enea), with a male Jarba, Antonio Giovannini, the best of a consistently strong group of singers. To hear him, and to sample Handel's own contribution, you could try Jarba's aria "Mi tradi l'infida sorte," which in classic Handelian fashion gives the singer a real workout. The German ensemble Lautten Compagney under director/lutenist Wolfgang Katschner also gets top billing, and the small ensemble and sensitive treatment of the recitatives live up to it. The main point of this performance is to show how opera was performed in the 18th century, when notions of an authentic text were far from a composer's or an impresario's mind, and for those interested in Handel and his world, this can be strongly recommended.–James Manheim
