While it never quite got the attention that the Mahler revival of the 1950s and 1960s got, the music of Franz Schubert, particularly with respect to the early symphonies and his choral works, saw an upsurge of its own beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s. As such, it went a long way to prove that this composer, who lived a tragically short life, was every bit as important to classical music as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. The revival of the choral works, in particular, were a big factor in this; and a good deal of the credit for all of it could be ascribed to the series of recordings made of them for EMI by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus during the 1980s, with Wolfgang Sawallisch conducting.
While Schubert's endless gift for melody sometimes tended to obscure the structure of his works for people, the fact is that the structure and the melody were important to one another; and this can be gauged in this recording, which places four relatively short choral works (settings of "Salve Regina", "Psalm 23", "Psalm 92", and "Hymn To The Holy Ghost") with two somewhat more expansive works, the sizeable "Deutsche Messe" (German Mass) for four-part chorus, wind instruments, organ, and timpani, and the more traditional (in Latin), but smaller-scale, Mass No. 2 In G Major, which is scored for three vocal soloists, four-part chorus, organ, and string orchestra. The Capella Bavariae, a smaller vocal ensemble, is accompanied by Sawallisch at the piano for the two Psalm settings; the legendary baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is the vocal soloist in the Deutsche Messe; and he, tenor Adolf Dallapozza, and legendary soprano Lucia Popp are featured in the Mass No. 2, one of the most poignant of all Latin Mass settings in the active choral literature.
Sawallisch, who did the complete Schubert symphonic survey with the Dresden State Orchestra in 1967, and then recorded the composer's final two Mass settings four years later in 1971, both times for Philips, went out of his way to do as much of the composer's known choral output as he could find in his survey for EMI; and he had the right forces for the job in the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, along with his cadre of vocal soloists, all of whom are very much at home in choral repertoire that, until recent decades, most of the world outside of Europe rarely if ever heard. This is an essential recording for anyone interested in choral music to have in his or her collection.
