Mehul was the most famous French composer in the time of the Revolution, Consulate and Empire, praised by Mendelssohn, Schumann, Weber and Berlioz, and lauded to the skies by Cherubini, who called Stratonice (the fifth of his 35 operas) “a work of genius, Mehul’s masterpiece”. Nor was he alone in this opinion, since in Paris alone it was performed over 200 times during the next quarter of a century, though withdrawn during the Reign of Terror because of the finale praising royal compassion. The opera – comique only in the sense of including spoken dialogue – is serious in tone (as the grave and dramatic overture presages): based on a classical subject, it tells how Seleucus, King of Syria, engages a doctor (Erasistrate) to cure his son Antiochus’s suicidal depression, which is in fact caused by his love for his father’s fiancee, the Princess Stratonice. (You can guess the rest.)
The opening chorus, with its classical poise, seems to forecast a work in Gluckian style; but an individual personality soon makes itself apparent, both in an altogether freer and more independent orchestral texture – to take only one instance, the featured cellos in a trio (of which more in a moment) – and in a richer harmonic vocabulary, as in Antiochus’s big aria at the start of the work. In this splendid movement, more a scena than an aria, Mehul displays a powerful talent in the delineation of strong passions (“the Michelangelo rather than the Raphael of music”, in Cherubini’s words) and in the flexibility with which he follows the rhythm of the words. He could also write with fine lyricism, as in Seleucus’s aria of concern for his son. Very striking, too, is his flair for structure, with ariosi developing from initial recitative-like passages, though the most impressive example of this sense of theatrical effect occurs half-way through the work, when, in notable diversity of texture, a duet leads to a trio which in turn leads to a quartet.
Curiously, the title-role of Stratonice has extremely little to sing, the solos being allotted to the three men (one each). Vocal honours conspicuously go to Yann Beuron, a stylish and mellifluous tenor who illuminates Antiochus’s mood of despair, with its subtle changes, by his meaningful treatment of words. Karl Daymond, as the doctor, shows an enviable ease in his high register, but the insistent throb in his voice becomes distracting. William Christie brings out all the nuances in Mehul’s score; and the dialogue (of which there is a great deal) is admirably spoken and paced by all – obviously well produced and intelligently performed.–Lionel Salter
