Wall of Voodoo was an American new wave/post-punk group from Los Angeles best known for the 1983 hit "Mexican Radio". The band had a sound that was a fusion of synthesizer-based new wave music with the spaghetti Western soundtrack style of Ennio Morricone. Collection includes: "Call Of The West" (1982); "Seven Days In Sammystown" (1985) + "Happy Planet" (1987) + "The Ugly Americans In Australia" (1988) 3 LP in 2 CD, Remastered 2012; "Lost Weekend: The Best Of Wall Of Voodoo - The I.R.S. Years" (2011).

Best known for their alternative radio classic "Mexican Radio," Wall of Voodoo formed in Los Angeles in 1977, originally as a soundtrack company. Led by singer/songwriter Stan Ridgway and rounded out by guitarist Marc Moreland, bassist/keyboardist Bruce Moreland, keyboardist Chas Gray, and drummer Joe Nanini, the group issued its self-titled debut EP in 1980. With the additions of bassist Bruce Moreland and his brother Marc on guitar (replacing Noland), the band's sound crystallized on 1981's full-length Dark Continent, which couched Ridgway's highly stylized and cinematic narratives – heavily influenced by Westerns and film noir, and sung in the vocalist's distinctively droll, narcoleptic manner – in atonal, electronically based settings.

Call of the West In 1982, following the exit of Bruce Moreland, Wall of Voodoo released Call of the West, which featured "Mexican Radio," their biggest hit. After an appearance at the 1983 US Festival, Ridgway left the group for a solo career. The remaining members enlisted singer Andy Prieboy, and resurfaced in 1985 with the LP Seven Days in Sammystown. Happy Planet followed two years later, while 1988's live effort The Ugly Americans in Australia* (the asterisk denoting that a few tracks were recorded in Bullhead City, Arizona) effectively closed out the Wall of Voodoo story.

Wall of Voodoo's second full-length album, Call of the West, was a noticeably more approachable work than their debut, Dark Continent, and it even scored a fluke hit single, "Mexican Radio," a loopy little number about puzzled American tourists that's easily the catchiest thing on the album. But while Wall of Voodoo's textures had gotten a bit less abrasive with time, the band's oddball minor-key approach was still a long way from synth pop, and frontman Stan Ridgway's songs were Americana at it's darkest and least forgiving, full of tales of ordinary folks with little in the way of hopes or dreams, getting by on illusions that seem more like a willful denial of the truth the closer you get to them. There's a quiet tragedy in the ruined suburbanites of "Lost Weekend" and the emotionally stranded working stiff of "Factory," and the title song, which follows some Middle American sad sack as he chases a vague and hopeless dream in California, is as close as pop music has gotten to capturing the bitter chaos of the final chapter of Nathaniel West's The Day of the Locust. In other words, anyone who bought Call of the West figuring it would feature another nine off-kilter pop tunes like "Mexican Radio" probably recoiled in horror by the time they got to the end of side two. But there's an intelligence and wounded compassion in the album's gallery of lost souls, and there's enough bite in the music that it remains satisfying two decades on. Call of the West is that rare example of a new wave band scoring a fluke success with what was also their most satisfying album.

Raven presents on a great value Double CD, three original, innovative albums by the highly regarded group WALL OF VOODOO: Seven Days in Sammystown (I.R.S., 1985), Happy Planet (I.R.S. 1987) and The Ugly Americans in Australia (I.R.S., 1988). These unique albums have been long unavailable and are ripe for re-evaluation. Wall of Voodoo emerged from the late 1970s Los Angeles alternative scene with a unique blend of machine-age junk music and off-kilter pop-rock. Like Devo, Wall of Voodoo’s sound was always challenging and entertaining or as once described, “like classy Halloween music, scary but pleasantly so”. Featuring Stan Ridgway as front man, the group made a big splash with clattering, expressive pop songs such as ‘Back in Flesh’, ‘Call of the West’ and the unlikely hit single ‘Mexican Radio’.

There was great intelligence at work and a bite to the music that continued when Ridgway left to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Andy Prieboy. Third album Seven Days in Sammystown yielded the hit single ‘Far Side of Crazy’ while the fourth Happy Planet boasted a demented re-working of the old Beach Boys fave ‘Do It Again’. The band was particularly popular in Australia which is where the rambunctious live album The Ugly Americans in Australia was recorded while they were on tour. Also available on Raven by Wall of Voodoo Dark Continent / Call of the West (2-for-1) (RVCD-309) and Stan Ridgway solo Mosquitos… Expanded (RVCD-355). With 140 minutes of superb audio, 35 tracks (including three rare bonus cuts), detailed liner notes and colour booklet this is an impressive package.

Few bands were more poorly served by a hit single than Wall of Voodoo. "Mexican Radio" was easily the least troubling song on 1982's Call of the West, and while the single led folks to imagine Wall of Voodoo were some quirky new wave novelty act, the album (like 1981's less rewarding but still impressive Dark Continent) was a tour through a land littered with emotional wreckage and dashed hopes, brought to life by the group's buzzing and chirping synthesizers, junk yard percussion, spaghetti western melodies, and Stan Ridgway's tense, frantic vocals. The success of "Mexican Radio" also had the unexpected effect of heightening tensions within the band, and by the time Wall of Voodoo released their third album, 1985's Seven Days in Sammystown, Ridgway had left the group, and even though Andy Prieboy was a talented and distinctive vocalist and songwriter, the tone of the music became very different, and Wall of Voodoo never recaptured the off-kilter brilliance of Call of the West. Lost Weekend: The Best of Wall of Voodoo, The I.R.S. Years is, as its title suggests, a compilation that features the highlights from the band's tenure at I.R.S. Records (meaning the group's early independent sides for Index Records don't make the cut), and it's divided between their two albums with Ridgway (nine songs) and three with Prieboy (eight songs). Ultimately, the five tracks from Call of the West are the most satisfying, but the material with Prieboy suggests Wall of Voodoo might have been better off taking a new name when he joined; the personality and approach of the music changed a great deal with the arrival of their new frontman, and while the best songs are impressive (especially "Far Side of Crazy" and "Elvis Bought Dora a Cadillac"), they ultimately sound like the work of a different group, talented but with a different agenda. (It's also worth noting that three of the Prieboy-era tunes here are covers, while all the Ridgway-era cuts are originals). The track selection on Lost Weekend gives an excellent picture of Wall of Voodoo's creative arc, the audio is solid, and Jerry McCulley's liner notes summarize the band's duality very well indeed; if this doesn't feel like the definitive Wall of Voodoo collection, as an introduction or career summary it does the job and captures what was best about both lineups of this important, under-appreciated band.

2011 collection, the first complete CD overview of Wall Of Voodoo, the popular Los Angeles Art rock/Alternative band whose musical legacy extends far beyond their '80s heyday. The release is the first anthology to showcase both incarnations of the group, featuring both the original classic line-up helmed by band founder/singersongwriter Stan Ridgway (1977-1983), as well as the revamped 2.0 edition fronted by songwriter-pianist Andy Prieboy (1983-1988).
