Vivaldi wrote Juditha Triumphans for the musically talented women of the Ospedale della Pieta, the Venetian orphanage with which he was associated on and off throughout most of his working life. The librettist, Giacomo Cassetti, described the work as a ''sacred military oratorio performed in times of war by the chorus of virgin singers, to be sung in the church of the Pieta''. The war was that into which Venice had entered against the Ottoman Empire and to which reference is made both in the body of the Latin text and in a ''Carmen Allegoricum'' which accompanied the text of the work's first performance.
Vittorio Negri, unlike McGegan, fields an orchestra of modern instruments, and a very good one it is, too. The obbligato playing is first-rate but the over-ornate harpischord continuo, though unquestionably imaginative, is the feature which, above all, dates the performance. The soloists are excellent for the most part. Birgit Finnila makes more of Judith's character and predicament than Gloria Banditelli in McGegan's recording and I felt that Banditelli was at a disadvantage in several arias where tempos were needlessly brisk. Finnila's ''Quanto magis generosa'' with viola d'amore and the memorable ''Veni, veni, me sequere fide'' with chalumeau are both affecting. Holofernes is sung by Julia Hamari who, like Judit Nemeth in McGegan's version, brings a lively sense of theatre to her interpretation. I should have liked a little more vocal weight behind the vigorous and chromatic ''Agita infido flatu'' but the aria is effective all the same, with commendably animated string accompaniment. Holofernes's servant Vagaus is agilely sung by Elly Ameling—her ''O servi volate'' is beautifully done—and Judith's servant Abra by Ingeborg Springer, who finds the centre of her notes with more certainty than Maria Zadori for McGegan.
In short a welcome reissue which will disappoint few listeners. I should not want to be without McGegan's version since it possesses many stylish features both in the singing and instrumental playing, but Finnila projects a more sympathetic figure in Judith than her rival and Negri generates a greater feeling for drama which assists a work admittedly somewhat lacking in dramatic purpose.–Nicholas Anderson
