(Ganassi & Ortiz) Works for Viola da Gamba

    World premiere recording
These ricercares come from two publications, one Italian and one Spanish, intended for the instruction of instrumentalists in the tasteful practice of improvisation and ornamentation of pre-existing melodies, a practice called 'diminution' or 'division.' In other words, they are textbooks for performers and as such have served every professional wind and string player of our times as guides to historical performance practice. They are indispensible.

    • Early music specialist Bettina Hoffman gives striking performances of this Renaissance music. To a large extent Ortiz still avoids the later ‘discovered’ more polyphonic possibilities of the instrument. Ganassi clearly expects a high technical level when writing a large number of double stops.

    • This recording brings to live music which may have remained of just scholarly importance to quite a few gamba music lovers. Their notation in tablature makes these pieces less than easily accessible for the interested amateur.

    • There are no other recordings available of this repertoire.
