This session for the French Black & Blue label (which was released domestically on an LP by Classic Jazz) features an all-star swing sextet comprised of trumpeter Wallace Davenport, trombonist Vic Dickenson, tenor saxpohonist Buddy Tate, pianist Claude Hopkins, bassist Arvell Shaw and drummer Cozy Cole. They perform swing and Dixieland standards along with a feature for Cole and Shaw on the more recent "Eva." Other highlights include "I Never Knew I Could Love Anybody," "Linger Awhile" and "Farewell Blues." Nothing too surprising occurs but these highly expressive players come up with consistently colorful ideas that should please mainstream fans.
