The pairing of Igor Stravinsky's ballets Petrushka (1911) and Jeu de cartes (1937) may afford insights into his development of neoclassical style, which was anticipated in the former work and stated fully in the latter. Indeed, the bright and tuneful music of both ballets tends toward playfulness, clever parody, and colorful scoring, all characteristic of neoclassicism, and the scenarios – a marionette that comes to life in Petrushka, and the personification of playing cards in Jeu de cartes – suggest a further connection, perhaps even to Stravinsky's notions of musical objectivity. This recording by Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra marks the first time that they have recorded Petrushka, in its original version, though Gergiev had recorded Stravinsky's other great ballets, L'Oiseau de feu and Le Sacre du printemps, previously for Phillips. This oversight may be surprising, considering the great popularity of Petrushka and the practice of most labels to release recordings of all three early ballets together. On the other hand, it's unusual for Gergiev to record Jeu de cartes, since he has focused almost exclusively on the Russian works and shown little interest in Stravinsky's European or American periods. Yet this album acquits Gergiev of negligence and chauvinism, and reveals that he has a fine appreciation for the witty and cosmopolitan aspects of both works, and that his approach to Stravinsky goes deeper than the expected promotion of all things Russian. The Mariinsky Orchestra delivers vibrant performances of both works, and the multichannel sound makes this hybrid SACD a treat for audiophiles.–Blair Sanderson
