Of all the bands that were unjustly overlooked in the early 1990's, none deserved the spotlight more than Tyketto. The band's debut album Don't Come Easy was an AOR/melodic rock masterpiece, embodying everything good about that style of music, and should have vaulted the band into the same arena as bands like Damn Yankees, Bad English, Firehouse, and Giant. Instead they went largely unnoticed.
Released in 1991, Don't Come Easy grabs you from the first song and doesn't let go. This is first class AOR all the way, led by Danny Vaughn (ex-Waysted) and his amazing voice. He has such a warm and powerful voice that I would consider as one of the best in the business.
With a couple of exceptions, the songs on Don't Come Easy are extremely well written. I don't care for the Warrant-esque Lay Your Body Down or Strip Me Down, but the rest of the album is close to perfection. In fact, every song on the album's first side could have been hit singles. They would have if the band had received the attention they deserved, at any rate.
Don't Come Easy remains not only the best Tyketto album, but one of the better AOR/melodic rock albums of that era. If you enjoy the bands listed above, or old-school AOR acts like Journey and Foreigner, you're definitely going to want to add this to your collection. It's not cheap, but sometimes the best things "don't come easy."~ Justin Gaines "Corporate Rocker", Amazon Review
Tyketto:
Tyketto was one of the best and most underrated radio friendly rock bands of the rock genre. They were never able to reach the massive success they so deserved, with their brand of hook heavy AOR sung with majestic vocals.
Formed in New York, New York by former Waysted vocalist Danny Vaughn, Brooke St.James (guitar), Jimi Kennedy (bass) and Michael Clayton (drums). The debut was an instant classic, sounding like a heavier version of Journey and Foreigner. The real talent was Vaughn's wonderful vocals, as displayed on the debut single "Forever Young" and the powerful ballad "Standing Alone". Jamie Scott replaced Kennedy for the second album, released on the upstart CMC International label, but it quickly sank without a trace.
Vaughn departed in 1995 to spend more time with his ill wife. Steve Augeri would be his replacement and appear on Tyketto's two final albums. It was apparent that the band would never reach more then cult status, and the members decided to break up. Augeri went on to replace Steve Perry in Journey.
Not much was heard from the former members until 1999 when it was rumored that a reunion was in the works. However, when Vaughn, Scott and Clayton decided to reunite and record once again, they settled on the name Vaughn for the project, but have done the odd reunion show with all the original members. In 2007 the band announced that they would finally but the Tyketto name to rest with a collection of unreleased tracks and demos entitled The Last Sunset.
