2010 release, the re-recorded 21st Anniversary Edition of The Wonder Stuff's 1989 sophomore album. To mark the 21st anniversary of the album the band went back to original producer, Pat Collier, to record the songs to give a updated feel. The album also includes extra tracks from around the time, including the hit 'Circlesquare'. HUP originally entered the charts at #5 with classics 'Golden Green', 'Don't Let Me Down', 'Cartoon Boyfriend' and many more.
They literally went into the studio and re-recorded them!
These new editions (Eight Legged Groove Machine included) are as "Live" sounding as you can get of a band re-recording in the studio. They plugged everything in as if they were playing on stage, and recorded as is, basically, without an audience - that's how these new re-recording CDs sound. So, instead of re-mastering the old ones with new digital clarity, they actually went into the studio with the band and decided to play the songs and record them! In a way, I was rattled, because I didn't expect that - I misunderstood what they meant when they said they re-recorded it all! F-ing cheeky, I tell ya! So typical of Miles!
To that end, Miles has lost some of his strength in his voice, obviously. He's gotten older and wiser, and you can hear that in his voice, but his youthful power is not quite there any more. He's really pushing it on some of the songs. I mean a lot has happened and time has passed. BUT! I suppose if I never listened to the old CDs again, I will never know the difference, you know what I mean? LOL I mean its strange, I'll know it's not the same, some of the songs have changed a bit and so has the singing (I don't want to spoil it any further, but I am sure the real fans know already from their recent gigs), it's still them, and in a way, it sounds as if they were playing a gig for me, with me there watching them by myself. I know, that sounds well soppy, but that's just the way it was with me and what they meant to me, back then, especially during HUP!
And I still love them. Ah the memories.

There was a sea change in British pop music in early 1989, a point where suddenly nearly all of the groups that had been making two-minute guitar pop songs inspired by the Smiths and/or the Buzzcocks were transformed into neo-psychedelic bands combining synth-based dance grooves with trippy guitar textures. Unlike many of their contemporaries (the Soup Dragons the most obvious example), the Wonder Stuff wisely resisted the temptation to jump onto the bandwagon with both feet. Even though the album starts with the Madchester-like "30 Years in the Bathroom," which opens with a lengthy collage of samples and found dialogue, the album then vacillates between new-style groove rock along the lines of the clattering "Radio Ass Kiss" and more traditional Wonder Stuff material like the excellent single "Don't Let Me Down Gently." There's even room for the banjo-powered "Golden Green," which presages the playful folk-rock of the group's next album, Never Loved Elvis.
