With 1986's Howling there was once again a line-up change and for the first time the name of Brewster appeared only once. Given the fact that so many recordings to this point were Brewster-Neeson-Brewster compositions, this would have some effect on the band's sound, right? Well of course it did and Doc Neeson has credited Bob Spencer with adding further sophistication. But, Spencer wasn't the only new boy as Eddie Rayner (of Split Enz fame) can be heard liberally throughout the album applying his keyboards. The Angels had used some organ before, notably on Dark Room, but this is the first time so much piano oriented keys had been applied. Finally then, any comparison to AC/DC should be well and truly tossed out.

Sound wise, it's not like anything they've done before but there's a lot to like about Howling. The album spawned four singles - 'Nature of the Beast', 'Don't Waste My Time', 'We Gotta Get Out of This Place' and 'Can't Take Any More'. I was always partial to the first of those and The Animals' cover was a massive hit that became somewhat anthemic. If you wanted to add another highlight, I'd say it'd be 'Did You Hurt Somebody'.

The other tracks aren't too bad, meaning over 12 tracks the band has produced a consistent effort. There are no real lows but the highs are more the 4 star variety.
