"Our music is comprised of dark passages through shaded landscapes. The flower Vanamo (Linnaea borealis) represents our music well. Its downward-turned bud rises from the forest floor by only a few inches. It is a wild flower of shady forests." With these words, Finnish musicians TENHI approach their own extraordinary music in a metaphorical manner.
But, what does it all mean in concrete terms? Tyko Saarikko, Ilmari Issakainen, and Ilkka Salminen founded TENHI in 1996. Ever since their first album "Kauan" (1999), this trio is achieving a balancing act between Finnish folklore, Progressive rock and the darkness of Gothic music – and quite successfully so, as TENHI's audience is a varied and open-minded assortment from all these scenes and beyond. The press attests to their unique style, compositional class, and stirring music as well: Visions magazine dubbed them "Sigur Rós in the woods", writing: "Romantic regression just couldn't be any more charming." Eclipsed magazine considers TENHI's music to be "sublime Folk of supernal beauty," while Orkus selected each of the band's studio albums so far as their "album of the month."

The first complete TENHI-album “Kauan“ contains calm and solemn songs, which – typically for TENHI – trepan inevitably into contemplation and prepare an ease of mind.

Even on an sunny winter-afternoon melancholy arises, although hopeful parts appear and show us through all this fog, that there’s still light and hope.

You want to close your eyes and enjoy the moment – On their second album Tenhi captures the listener once again into the endless dephts of Lapland.

However the further development of the band is clear to hear. The pieces are full of changes, combining the atmospheric, partly rocky moments of their debut album ”Kauan” with the shamenistic sounds of their mini CD ”airut:ciwi”.

Since their beginnings, TENHI have devoted themselves to their own interpretation of folk-influenced, progressive music. Merely eight months after their recent studio album ‘Maaäet’, TENHI present the piano-dominated ‘Airut:Aamujen’, the next chapter in the band’s own ‘Airut’ saga.


“’Airut:Aamujen’ is the sequel to TENHI’s ‘Airut:Ciwi’, which was released in 2001,” Tyko Saarikko tells us. “It was originally released in a small limited edition through our own small Utustudio label in December 2004 under the name Harmaa. After signing this project to Auerbach Tonträger / Prophecy Productions as well, we wanted to re-release it under the name of TENHI and so bring the saga back together.”


TENHI’s ‘Airut’ saga is based on the visions of Tyko Saarikko and Ilmari Issakainen and further explores the paths found within certain TENHI songs. For example, the song ‘Kielo’, originally written for TENHI’s debut album ‘Kauan’, was the source of inspiration for the first two chapters. The third chapter that has already been composed will be entitled ‘Airut:Savoie’ and will elaborate on themes found in the tracks ‘Tuulenkaato’ and ‘Maa Syttyy’ from the album ‘Maaäet’; this album is scheduled for release in 2007.

There have been comfortingly few changes in Tenhi since their last album "Väre"; this Finnish band is still performing its unique brand of nature music, music that is above all atmospheric and touching.

But there's a lot more to it: for years now, the musicians have been stressing the meaning of the aesthetics beyond their compositions, as Tenhi is meant to be a reflection of their sensitive perception of nature, not only in sound, but also in lyrics and pictures. Maybe a pictorial comparison can help to understand Tenhi's development. "Our new songs are run through by our perception of the Earth," multi-instrumentalist Tyko Saarikko tells us. "Our gaze isn't directed towards the horizon anymore, but towards the soil beneath our feet and the nature in our immediate surroundings." Musically, vocals, piano, and violin are clearly mixed to the fore, giving "Maaäet" a more immediate expression. This picturesque character is mirrored in symbolic images that have been specifically created for the twelve new tracks, adding a fairy-tale quality to the whole work of art. "This album is much more personal, much darker than its predecessors," says the versatile musician who associates "Maaäet" with "the smell of a forest ground covered in autumn leaves". The band allows single melodies enough space to unfold a deep capacity for fascination, dismissing all superficial questions of styles or genres. The Finnish lyrics are also very profound, weaving around motifs such as retreat, vulnerability, esoteric moods, and nature mysticism.
Whatever name you'd like to put on Tenhi's manifold creative undertakings – the band members themselves describe it as Folk-influenced progressive music –, with "Maaäet", they succeeded in crafting a warm-hearted deepening of their music.

In order to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the band, TENHI treat their fans to an all-inclusive, three-CD compilation. This is not to be seen as a regular album, but rather as a collection of rare tracks for die-hard fans. On three full-length CDs, you will find:

- the sought-after TENHI demo “Kertomusika” from 1997, for the first time available in digital form on this compilation;
- the two mini-CDs “Hallavedet” (1998) und “Airut:Ciwi” (2001) that have been sold out for a long time;
- a coherent album unity called “Kaski” that has been unreleased so far;
- the two bonus tracks from the re-released version of “Kauan”;
- some demo and alternative versions of regular TENHI songs.

“Folk Aesthetics 1996–2006” is completed by a spectacular booklet of 76 pages, containing not only liner notes, the entire lyrics and their translations, but also fascinating drawings and paintings courtesy of band member Tyko Saarikko.
