Tchaikovsky - almost alone - saw the possibilities of specially-composed music for the classical ballet, which was hugely popular in nineteenth-century Russia. His secret was to work closely with his choreographer and link music and dance routines at the outset: this proved vital to the stage action and the final success of the whole production. Swan Lake was the first, and Nutcracker the last of Tchaikovsky’s three ballet scores. Following the success of Sleeping Beauty came the request for another ballet, which eventually formed a double-bill with his opera Yolanta. Tchaikovsky agreed, unusually, that some of the Nutcracker music could be played at an orchestral concert before the ballet opened in St Petersburg. At the concert, an enthusiastic audience encored almost every number.

Nutcracker is based on one of ETA Hoffmann’s fairy-tales - "The Nutcracker and the King of the Mice". In Tchaikovsky’s ballet, a little girl falls asleep on Christmas Eve. A nutcracker, given by her godfather, comes to life: in her dream it turns into a prince, who takes her on a series of adventures in the Land of Sweets. The ballet suite consists of a Miniature Overture (with no cellos or double-basses) and a series of dances performed by various characters who live in the Land of Sweets - they include the Sugar Plum Fairy, Russians, Chinese and Arabians. The suite ends with the Waltz of the Flowers from Act III.

A well-known fairy-tale by Perrault was the inspiration for Tchaikovsky’s ballet Sleeping Beauty. He worked on it with an old friend, Marius Petipa - the French-born ballet-master who planned and choreographed the whole work. The ballet contains some of Petipa’s most inspired dance routines and Tchaikovsky’s most haunting music.

The director of the theatre in St Petersburg wanted a production which was set in the time of Louis XIV: there would be costumes and music to match, and a last-act dance that recalled some other fairy tales - Puss-in-Boots, Cinderella and Tom Thumb. It was first produced in St Petersburg in 1890. A lavish production by Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes - at London’s Alhambra Theatre in 1921 - was also a great success. The orchestral suite from the ballet was arranged after Tchaikovsky’s death.

Swan Lake was the first of Tchaikovsky’s ballets. He spent the summer of 1876 with friends and relatives, and worked hard on the score. In a letter to Rimsky-Korsakov, he wrote that "I’ve been waiting for some time to try my hand at this type of music". The ballet, in four acts, tells the tale of a bewitched princess, captive and entranced: she represents man’s unattainable ideal.

After Tchaikovsky’s death, parts of the ballet were adapted to form an orchestral suite. The Waltz uses music from Act I - after a short introduction, the music increases in energy to a memorable climax: there is a second melody on the lower strings. The Mazurka is an old Polish dance in 3/4 time, probably included by Tchaikovsky as a gesture to the classical dance form.
