Compositeur et violoniste virtuose Tchèque, né en 1801 et mort en 1866, Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda joua dans l’orchestre de Ständetheater de Prague que dirigeait Carl Maria von Weber. C’est peu dire de ses compétences musicales… Il fut par la suite un chef d’orchestre recherché pour la rigueur et la musicalité de sa direction. Côté musique, il laisse une œuvre abondante dans tous les genres musicaux mais c’est surtout sa musique de chambre qui retient l’attention.
Dans ses quatuors, on dévoile non pas le créateur obnubilé par Beethoven, comme on le rencontre dans ses symphonies, mais un post-mozartien inventif, pour lequel, au sein du quatuor, le premier violon sera progressivement amené à s’émanciper. Dans ces œuvres datant de 1835, 1836 et 1838, on retrouve son jaillissement, la force de son assise rythmique. On est aussi en présence de l’inventeur musical un peu “fou”. Partout des mélodies superbes et des rythmes fougueux vous assaillent littéralement et il est incompréhensible que ces trois œuvres – Quatuors n° 2 et 3 surtout – n’occupent pas une place prépondérante au cœur du répertoire.
"As Maître de Chapelle and court composer, Kalliwoda's oeuvre includes all types of compositions. He wrote seven symphonies, many overtures and a number of concertos for solo instruments. His shorter works for keyboard and solo songs, both prolifically produced, reflected the growing demand for 'house music' in the nineteenth century. String Quartets were not often performed publicly in the early nineteenth century; they were not often performed publicly in the early nineteenth century; they were more often heard in the private sphere. There were two sorts of string quartet: the 'brilliant' and the 'classical', developed side by side, and corresponded exactly to the differences between the two venue types, the concert hall and the private setting. These quartets are 'non-concertant' for the first violin, with the music nicely divided up among the instruments, not heavy for any of them, and in the beautiful style of Mozart". (David Hurwitz)
