The Masses in C, K317 and 337, which date from 1779 and 1780 respectively, are the last of Mozart's 15 Salzburg Masses, ten of which are in this key. Both are short (26 minutes and 23 minutes, respectively), in compliance with the Archbishop of Salzburg's rule that no Mass, including the Epistle Sonata and the Offertory or Motet, should last longer than three quarters of an hour. The earlier of the two, K317, is well known (perhaps because it has a convenient nickname, probably referring to its use at an annual service held since 1751 in commemoration of the miraculous crowning of an image of the Virgin in the pilgrimage church of Maria-Plain near Salzburg) and has been recorded many times, whereas K337 is virtually unknown, though musically no less interesting. Both contain, in the Agnus Dei, remarkable premonitions of the Countess's arias of Figaro: K317 of ''Dove Sono?'' and K337 of ''Porgi, amor''. These are, perhaps, the best movements, and are set for solo soprano: that in K337 is ravishingly laid out for oboe, two bassoons, organ obbligato, muted violins and pizzicato cellos and basses. The Benedictus in K337 is also very striking: normally set (as in K317, for instance) for solo quartet, it is here scored for four-part chorus, with the orchestra doubling the voice parts, and is in the form of an austere fugue in A minor.
It is good to have these two fine works together on one record. Stephen Cleobury secures splendid singing from his choristers and predictably stylish playing from the ECO. The solo team, headed, with intelligence and skill, if not always with quite the warmth one might wish for, by Margaret Marshall, is a good one, and sets the seal on two very satisfying performances. These factors should be sufficient recommendation. If, however, you insist on not having a recording of K337 you can choose between Karajan on DG: rather over emphatic and full-blooded in K317 and with Bruckner's Te Deum as coupling; and Marriner on Argo: tasteful and alert (and with a superb solo quartet) in K317 and with Mozart's Litaniae Lauretanae, K195 as coupling. But half the pleasure of this beautifully engineered new Argo recording lies in the less familiar C major Mass—and it is a pleasure that should not be missed.
