"The man who was Django’s prestigious partner in the first, immortal Quintette du H.C.F. has made an appearance (on wax) for Barclay with a series of recordings in which you can rediscover his pretty sound and abundant, easy ideas; in a word, his style which, though with less of a bite than before, has lost none of its grace." Those were the first lines of the review that a certain Michel Delaroche (in fact Boris Vian) wrote for the November 1955 issue of Jazz Hot; the subject was this album, the first that Stéphane Grappelli ("Grappelly" at the time) had made on violin under his own name since he'd left England.Tracklist:
The violinist had celebrated his definitive return to France at the Club Saint-Germain on the night of April 25th 1954; he would appear there on and off for the next seven years. Since his return he'd (officially) been back into the studios on three occasions. On the first he was a pianist (for the Club Frangais du Disque). The second was for a recording by Jack Diéval and his “Jazz aux Champs-Elysées” group. On his third visit - with a quartet he co-led with Henri Crolla, a group that was then appearing at the Piano Club at No. 49, Rue de Ponthieu - Grappelli did these two sessions, sextet plus quartet, that produced the 10” LP and the 7” EP that are presented here. June 2nd 1954 marked the 3rd edition of the Salon du Jazz and, along with Crolla, Emmanuel Soudieux and Pierre Fouad, Grappelli had taken part in the concert given in memory of Django, who'd passed away a year earlier. After the hardly-conclusive attempts made at the end of the war to reunite them all, Grappelli realised that his career was to take a separate direction.
At the Club Saint-Germain, where he found himself surrounded by a whole new generation of musicians, he observed with some satisfaction that he was totally at ease in their company. Three of them accompanied him into the studios as his rhythm-section: pianist Maurice Vander and drummer Jean-Louis Viale - both had been involved in Django’s ultimate recordings (the guitarist hadn't succumbed to the temptation of resting on his laurels either) - and drummer, Benoit Quersin, another of the Belgian musicians who, together with Bobby Jaspar and Sadi, came over the border and shook up the Parisian jazz scene a little. They were joined for the sextet sides by the excellent vibraphone-player Michel Hausser - who'd accompany Crolla the following month - and guitarist René Duchaussoir, a man reputed for his solid tempo.
At the Club Saint-Germain, Grappelli had displayed an audacity that stirred the admiration of pianist René Urtreger; but here he preferred to explore his irresistible palette as a man of seduction, not that he sacrificed any of his inventiveness.
He chose a programme of standards - some of which, The Nearness of You, an elegant little masterpiece, Tangerine or Birth of the Blues, he was recording for the very first time - and also two songs by Charles Aznavour, Aime-moi and Viens au creux de mon épaule. The former, issued at the time on a 7”, wasn't included on the LP “Stéphane Grappelly et son sextette.” As for the latter, this marks the first time it has even been released. Stéphane must have appreciated it, however; he'd performed it on the piano the year before, and 1957 he chose to do it again, but this time with a so-called “symphonic” accompaniment that caused his improvisations to lose much of their flavour.
