This two-CD sampler is most highly recommended for listeners not familiar with Stan Getz's recordings of the 1950s and '60s. Starting with a version of "Stella by Starlight" that co-stars guitarist Jimmy Raney, this set matches Getz's cool tenor with such artists as trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Conte Candoli, trombonist J.J. Johnson, baritonist Gerry Mulligan, pianists Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans and Chick Corea, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer and vibraphonist Gary Burton. Also included are his two main bossa nova hits "Desafinado" and "The Girl from Ipanema" along with a couple of tracks from Getz's highly-rated Focus album. It's a fine overview of the great tenor's middle years.Review by Scott Yanow, Allmusic.com
Since these CDs squash in over two and a quarter hours of Getz's finest, there is room for some of the longer jazz tracks he made, notably the ones with Dizzy Gillespie such as "It Don't Mean A Thing" and the extraordinary "Wee (Allen's Alley)". "Wee" rockets along for more than eight minutes and has Stan and Dizzy at a tempo that would defy speed of thought and articulation in any normal mortals. Another eight-minute one is "I'm Late, I'm Late" from the extraordinary Focus suite written by composer Eddie Sauter. Expansive too is "My Funny Valentine" from the famous 1957 concert with trombonist J.J. Johnson and Oscar Peterson. Peterson is also a prime mover in "Blues For Herky" on the first disc, where Gerry Mulligan and Ella Fitzgerald are also featured. Pianist Bill Evans and Getz seemed to be made for each other and it's sad that they didn't record together often. "Melinda" is a good example of their empathy. Beautiful ballad performances abound and the second disc has many of them, including "Sweet Rain", "I Remember Clifford" and "'Round Midnight".
