Spectrum were by far Australia's best known prog band of the 70s. The funny thing is that, just like the Madder Lake, (and I'll whisper it) Spectrum weren't all that prog, at least not by hardcore British prog standards of the day. Maybe it's the prog snob in me who has been brought up listening to practically every British prog act that I can get my hands on (and a few from other countries of course) but there's something distinctly unproglike about bands like Spectrum and Madder Lake. In the latter's case, the band was very good at playing hard rock/blues rock, prog and pop but rarely at the same time, releasing two albums of part prog, part other things. In Spectrum's case, especially with their debut album, the effect often appears to be a splicing of generic soft rock and country rock with prog, a splicing which is often artificial and a far cry from better prog music that was available at the time. It should be pointed out that Spectrum were actually a pretty good straightahead rock band as evidenced with the success of the countryish rock of the classic single 'I'll Be Gone' and the band's alter ego Indelible Murtceps. This does lend more weight to the impression that the progressive approach is forced and artificial. To be fair though, Spectrum would improve the prog aspect of their sound and would become a more "authentic" prog band with the release of Milesago. And maybe they had no intention of aping hardcore British prog bands so my thoughts might be completely unfair. Whatever, this is how I feel and the above just needs to be borne in mind if it appears I'm being too negative about Spectrum.

Having said all the above, I quite like Part One, just maybe not as completely as the band would have intended. My main gripe is that the prog of the album mostly only applies to the lengthy instrumental breaks that appear somewhat artifically shoehorned into otherwise bog standard soft rock songs – see 'Fiddling Fool' and 'Superbody' as classic examples. The instrumental breaks are more psychedelic/art rock noodling than out and out prog but again that might just be the snob in me coming out. The instrumental breaks are just about interesting enough, and the main themes tolerable enough, for these tracks to end up just above average. 'Make Your Stash' and 'Drifting' are similar but are too short so there's even less value to be had from the instrumental breaks. For example, the only virtue to 'Drifting' is a pretty neat keyboard solo. The only track that breaks the mould for me is the closing 'Mumbles I Wonder Why'. I feel this has the best integration of Spectrum's catchy rock sound with their progressive approach. Unlike anywhere else on the album, the two aspects of Spectrum's sound work together – with brilliant keyboard backing throughout and heaps of cool instrumental sections appearing almost randomly over its length rather than having soft rock verses/chorus with a big progressive instrumental break as is common for the rest of the album.

To be completely fair Part One is a promising debut and it would be unfair to expect Spectrum to deliver a completely rounded prog monster at the first attempt. And they did improve immediately with the following Milesago. But the weaknesses of Part One, which would be repeated, perhaps to a lesser extent, on Milesago, demonstrate why Spectrum aren't that well known apart from mostly hardcore prog aficionados and fans of 70s Australian rock.
