    Changing their band name as often as they changed the genre of music they played, Spandau Ballet began as a punk rock band calling themselves The Cut. Shortly after they changed their name to The Makers, and again In 1978 they changed their sound to a more power pop renaming themselves Gentry. Changing their sound once again to a more polished, synth heavy pop with an emphasis on the romantic the band changed their name for a last time to Spandau Ballet after (as the story goes) seeing the name "Spandau Ballet" written on a lavatory wall in a bar in Berlin. The term "Spandau Ballet" refers to the violent twitching movement done by prisoners at the Spandau Prison who had been hung just before life left their body. A morbid thing to name a band over indeed, but what has to be stated is the talent this band has for writing catchy, infectious songs like those heard on this, the band's debut album released in 1980 under the Chrysalis label. Produced by Richard James Burgess (Adam Ant, America, Kim Wilde, Rubicon and Hot Chocolate,) the sound on "Journeys to Glory" is somewhat different than that heard two years later on the album which would give them worldwide fame, the multi-platinum selling "True," which was heavily laden with synthesizers, glitzy and with more of a lean toward the romantic, a sound that Spandau Ballet would be most known for.

    Here the band's early affinity for punk can be heard and felt, especially on the tracks "To Cut A Long Story Short," and "Musclebound," "Age Of Blows," will remind you of The Ramones' " "I Wanna Be Sedated." "Confused" is a glorious ode to The Talking Heads, with it's simple delivery, rising and falling vocals, and it is truly pure dance fun. "Toys" is a showcase for the wonderful vocals of Tony Hadley. His deep, almost baritone voice is dramatic and striking, bring to this song the vibe and life it needs. His voice rises above the music giving "Toys" lift.

    The sound heard throughout "Journeys To Glory" is fresh, new wave, artistic and bold. Part punk, with heavy use of synthesizers this is an extraordinary release by a band who, sadly is really only known for one single. However this band was so much more. Talented, and not afraid to take risks with their songwriting, then bringing those songs to life by musicians who know their craft well. The overall sound on "Journeys To Glory" is incredible. Fresh, and wanting to be heard. A forgotten part of this great band's repertoire, take a listen to this. You will be pleasantly surprised to just what the sound of Spandau Ballet was during their humble beginnings.
