Sandy Bull is known for some of the first extended instrumental compositions for guitar that incorporated elements of folk, jazz, and Indian and Arabic-influenced dronish modes. This album, taken from two nights of performances in February 1969 recorded at San Francisco's legendary Matrix, finds Bull experimenting with guitar electronics, as well as working out on the acoustic instruments that were the mainstay of his Vanguard Records Fantasias and Inventions albums. Packaging features rare photos and detailed liner notes.

Sandy Bull was a pioneering and sometimes brilliant musician whose personal problems derailed a promising career. There are just a handful of albums to his credit, but no live material has been available until now. Still Valentine's Day documents two sets from two nights in 1969 at San Francisco's Matrix club, just before the release of E Pluribus Unum. Given the multi-tracking and other accompaniment that appears on his albums, perhaps the most fascinating thing about this set is how he pulls it off live. On some tracks, he actually uses a tape with the album track minus the lead part to play along with. For others, he uses a guitar setup that splits the signal to both a bass amp and a regular guitar amp, much like Charlie Hunter does today. Then he adds a heavy tremolo to the guitar amp to provide a pulse to play against, resulting in a weird kind of psychedelic blues drone. The recording itself is quite good, although there are some spots of distortion and Bull at times seems frustrated with his setup. His performance, while not perfect, is quite good, especially on the oud improvisations. The tremolo-driven pieces are captivating and hypnotic. Still Valentine's Day isn't the place to start with Sandy Bull, but it's an important addition to his catalog that fans will want to hear.

Review by Sean Westergaard, Allmusic.com

There was no one like Sandy Bull. This is a trip into one man's musical mind–sometimes relatively logical sounding (or at least as logical as Bull could be), or sometimes a more drug addiction influenced approach. But heard as one set of music (especially the first six tracks) this is Sandy Bull in all his sharp/hazy glory. Is this the best place to hear Bull if you've not heard his studio albums? Probably not–unless you want your synapses jerked around whether you want or not–which can be a good thing. Most people unfamiliar with Bull's work should first listen to "Re-Inventions", a compilation of a lot of his best work for the Vanguard label, and then take the trip into this live concert–the only live set of Bull's music released. This live set floats somewhere between three and four "stars"-I gave it four because Bull never strayed from his own music path, even with his personal problems, and because music like this was unheard of in '69–but others aren't really wrong in rating this three "stars". To each his own regarding the performance.

This music (both sets) was recorded in 1969 at the Matrix, a small reformed pizza parlor that was used by a number of bands/musicians during this era. Bull was influenced by just about every type of music he heard. He fused folk, jazz, classical, r 'n' r., middle-eastern, and anything else he heard into one giant shimmering slab of music. Similar to England's Davy Graham he incorporated Eastern rhythms into his music and could play most any stringed instrument he found. Plus he used "sounds" from tapes or from his instrument (s) that gave his music a real identity–no one truly approached music or sounded like Bull–especially in the '60s. Just listen to "Improvisation For Oud 1" (and "2'), both relatively short pieces that pack in a lot of who Bull was. And go even further out with "Electric Blend 1" (and "2"), both lengthy pieces where Bull takes himself (and us) into some shimmering, rhythmic soundscapes that are quite stunning–especially for 1969. And listen to what he does with Chuck Berry's "Memphis TN".

And while you're purchasing this album, check out (and then purchase!) "The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick" (also on the Water label), by John Fahey. They both shared this Feb. '69 bill-which must have been pretty spectacular. Taken together, this album and Fahey's idiosyncratic set are good examples of music from an era before music became slick, computerized, and artificial sounding. Fahey is well known but not so Sandy Bull–why I don't understand. Perhaps it's because his vision of music was so individualistic that it fell off most people's music radar. And that's too bad. Bull was a true pioneer who incorporated many styles of music into his own, and (like Fahey) never felt he had to compromise. Listening to Sandy Bull you felt like he never truly knew where his music would take him (and us as listeners), or did he? But one thing I do know–this is an exciting set of improvisational music from a one-of-a-kind musician.
