"Paris Blues" features a 1957 meeting between saxophonist Lucky Thompson and the king of barrelhouse, Sammy Price. The two are backed by an excellent French band featuring guitar, double bass and traps. Hailing from the glorious era, this music is a remarkable expression of the bliss that can happen when Jazz and Blues become one. The album kicks off with, 'I Want A Little Girl.' It's one of a handful of songs with Sammy Price on vocals. His Blues singing is fantastic! Afterwards, the title track begins with a boogie-woogie piano solo. Before long, the band jumps on and joins Price. In this piece and through the album, Jean-Pierre Sasson's electric guitar work is superb. 'Up Above My Head' is a lively tune with Price's jovial vocals. Lucky Thompson shines on the tenor saxophone. 'Minor Blues' is a high-minded straight Jazz contribution. Sax, guitar and piano trade relaxed solos. The guys do justice to the standard, 'Sweet Georgia Brown.' As one of the highlights, it swings! Sammy Price is all over 'How Long Blues.' His bawdy vocals are filled with humor in this slow blues. His piano work is also stunning. Stylistically, 'Lucky T' is the most modern selection as it employs bop. The thirty-five minute disc closes on a high note with 'Embassy Boogie.' Price sings and stretches his fingers out, turning the boogie-woogie dial up to '10.' As an album, "Paris Blues" is fantastic for a number of reasons. It's a feel good listen as the mood mingles with happy, cerebral and swingin'. In addition, the quality of the music and the digital mastering is superb. Also, the CD comes with good bilingual liner notes. The only complaint is the brief length of the disc. Gitanes is again to be applauded for liberating another European jewel from their vaults.Tracklist:
