Very good singer-songwriter album that’s quirky almost to a fault. It’s no mystery why this album was not a commercial success, the songs are just too weird! Part of this has to do with Dave MacIver’s totally bizarre lyrics, partly it’s Hine’s snarky, deadpan vocal delivery. Musically, it sort of falls somewhere between Al Stewart (the more pensive, English folkie stuff) and Randy Newman (the more blues/country-inflected moments), though rarely do the two cross over. And then there’s songs like “Kerosene,” where a jazz feel pervades, and it starts bordering on an odd variant of progressive rock.

Part of this is no doubt due to the strange nature of the Hine/MacIver songwriting partnership, part of this is due to the cast of characters that populate the album: Simon Jeffes (later founder of Penguin Cafe Orchestra), Peter Robinson (ex-Quatermass), Paul Buckmaster, etc.

That said, there are moments of great beauty on this album, too, like “Landscape” and “Me You Mine.” “Scarecrow” is such a sad song, I feel like my heart’s been ripped out every time I listen to it!
