One of the most underrated arrangers around, Roger Neumann had a rare opportunity to record his big band in 1983; surprisingly, the orchestra's second instrumental date would not take place for another decade. Neumann, who is featured on tenor during "Emily," heads a 19-piece big band on this highly recommended album that includes among its personnel the then-unknown altoist Eric Marienthal, trombonists Herbie Harper and Bob Enevoldsen, pianist Tom Ranier, and the tenors of Herman Riley and Bob Hardaway. Neumann's ensemble performs three jazz standards, a romping "Flintstones," and a three-part suite dedicated to Blue Mitchell ("They Called Him 'Blue'") that has solos from each of the five trumpeters. Each of the swinging performances is memorable in its own way, and this ( now long out of print ) album is well-worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Roger Neumann is a Los Angeles-based jazz saxophonist, flutist, composer, arranger and music educator. He has contributed arrangements to some of the most important artists in jazz, including the Count Basie, Buddy Rich and Ray Charles bands as well as for such pop stars as The Beach Boys. He is an active music educator at venues across the country. He is also the principal director of Buddy Collette's JazzAmerica, a non-profit organization that provides free jazz education to young players.
In 1965, Neumann enrolled at the Berklee School of Music to pursue a graduate degree. On the day after finishing his Berklee degree a year later, Neumann was offered a job by Woody Herman to join Herman's Thundering Herd Band, with whom he toured for the next year, winding up in California. Neumann is heard with that edition of the Herman band on the 1967 “Thundering Herd Live at The Big Sur Jazz Festival” album.
In 1978, he formed his own group, “Roger Neumann's Rather Large Band,” consisting of the cream of the crop of West Coast jazz musicians. The band won immediate critical acclaim for two albums on the SeaBreeze Label, Introducing Roger Neumann's Rather Large Band (1983) and Instant Heat (1994). Against all odds, both albums enjoyed a modicum of commercial success at a time when interest in big band jazz was on the wane– a tribute to Neumann's composition and arranging genius– and both albums continue to enjoy regular airplay on coast-to-coast jazz radio. Neumann's hard-driving arrangements for the Rather Large Band, executed by such veteran sidemen as Hernan Riley, Blue Mitchell, Bob Enevoldsen, Bob Hardaway, Med Flory and John Heard resurrected an interest in big band jazz that had ebbed since the great Buddy Rich Big Band recordings of the late 1960s.
