The first album of Robin's "lost" period. Robin is clearly searching here, looking for something different. Unfortunately he finds it. This album is a strange mix of couple new studio tracks, a couple of new tracks recorded live and three previously recorded tracks recorded live. Not really a studio album and it doesn't really sound like a live album as the crowd is barely audible on the live tracks and the sound is so similar to the studio tracks that they are almost indecipherable from each other.
Most obvious difference is James Dewar is no longer at the the mic. Bass and vocals are handled by Dave Bronze on this album. While Dave Bronze is not a terrible singer he's no match for the classic Dewar. He has a very clear, somewhat thin yet pleasant voice that is more fit for pop music. The album also suffers from a poor production job. The drums have clunky generic 80's sound to them and Robin's guitar sound even suffers from being to distorted and heavily processed with various effects. Just winds up sounding muddy.
Unfortunately 3 of the 4 new tracks are forgettable. Opening track actually brings to mind comparisons to the title track from 'Footloose' in sound and feel though definitely not a direct cop. Robin seems to be trying to write in a more commercial current vein. Of the new tracks, the clear winner is the title track. A really good song that suffers under the poor production of this album. I would like to hear Robin re-record this song. Two of the previously recorded songs are from the 'Back it Up' album. Here the vocals of Dave Bronze stand out in a negative way compared to the vocals of James Dewar on the studio cuts. The album finishes with a fine live version of Bridge of Sighs.
Also different here for Robin is the cover art. Heavy Wishbone Ash, Uriah Heep feel. I for one dig it. One of my favorites.by echomusic, rateyourmusic
