Don't take the album title too literally; it is drawn from that of BWV989 and is the focus of neither the programme nor the annotation. The language used in Bach's original titles overall (or individual movements) is usually an indication of the 'national' style he had in mind, here sorting most of the Italian from the French, but the title of BWV992 is given primarily in French and the Italian original is omitted, whilst that of the final movement appears only as a translation. A few literals have escaped the proof-reader's eye, of which I urge you not to believe the words on the back of the jewel-case: 'The disc, compromising works for keyboard … '.
Alessandrini takes advantage of the volatile and voluble 'Italian' character of the Chromatic Fantasia but makes nothing of the indicated piano/forte contrasts. However, his adept variations of articulation enhance the texture and climaxing of the Fugue. The three movements of BWV823 are believed to be all that survive from a full-scale suite, and the loss of the remainder is regrettable. Bach's authorship is unproven but believable. The Fugue on a theme of Albinoni exists in two versions, and why the earlier and simpler one (BWV951a) should have been chosen here is unexplained.
These and a few other minor reservations aside, these are majestic performances, full of insight, that demand a place on the shelves of any Bachkenner. The instrument, a generously resonant copy of one from the school of Silbermann (c 1740), has been beautifully recorded.–John Duarte
