Here is another fine recording of Telemann’s magnificent Thunder Ode, a work inspired by the catastrophic earthquake that destroyed Lisbon in 1755. It is coupled with one of the composer’s most jubilant cantatas, and both still impress as works that should be heard much more often, perhaps in lieu of an overplayed composition by Handel or Bach. They are surely in that league. This CD, re-issued in Chandos’ “Chaconne” line, faces inevitable comparison with the performances on Capriccio, conducted by Hermann Max, although the couplings are different. Max’s Thunder Ode is given a whole CD to itself, while his cantata recording contains two additional, and magnificent, Telemann compositions.
In general, Max has the better soprano soloists in Ann Monoyios and Barbara Schlick, while the bass soloists on the Hickox recording are a little more sure of intonation and utilize more vocal coloring in their interpretations. Both tenors are good, but Wilfried Jochums brings more passion to the tenor solos on the Max recording. In sum, this Chandos recording is neat and precise, almost machine-like in its execution, whereas Max goes for the jugular, with bolder tempos and wilder abandon. The Chandos recording goes well with the Hickox performance, being clean and clear, yet a little distant and with a notable absence of bass. The Capriccio engineering team created sound that is a little muffled yet still has lots of presence and a solid bass line. The Capriccio timpani really thunder!–ClassicsToday
