In 1779 he was elected maestro di cappella at the cathedral of Milan, where he remained until 1784. Here he exercised his true vocation of composer, in addition to at least twenty of his most successful operas, a vast amount of sacred music for the cathedral, and educating a number of clever pupils, the most distinguished of whom was Cherubini.
Sarti's appointment in 1779 to the prestigious post of Kapellmeister of Milan Cathedral resulted in numerous new compositions, many of ehich aooear on this CD, revealing his true value as a musician. From several articles edited by Don Luciano Migliavacca (the current Kapellmeistel in Milan), we know that Sarti got off to an excellent start, thank largely to the decision to place the choirs above the organs, in order to make fully use of the acoustics. During Lent and for polyphonic chant the choir returned to its original place. One of the elements which the works on this CD have in common is the presence of harmonised organs; in the writing for organ there is always an abbligato part which accompanies, harmonises with and provides counterpoint to the voises and without doubt it encouraged the organist to develop, where they were not actually written down, melodic formulae to maintain harmonic substance.
