Le cinesi (''The Chinese ladies'') is one of numerous pieces of the kind—generally called azione teatrale or something similar—composed during the eighteenth century for court entertainments.
The libretto, by the incomparable imperial poet Pietro Metastasio, had first been set in 1735, by Antonio Caldara; one of the three singing roles was written for a royal pupil of Caldara's, Maria Theresa, soon to be the Hapsburg empress. It was for her pleasure, in 1754, that Gluck's setting (to an augmented version of the same text) was written, when she was visiting his patron the Prince of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The playlet is an elegantly flimsy excuse for varied music. In it three Chinese ladies and the brother of the one of them assume, as a diversion, fictional roles in which they act out, and sing, scenes of different kinds, one from classical tragedy, then a pastoral love scene with pleas and rejections, and finally a comical, coquettish one, and there is an ensemble to end with. It is all very artificial and contrived, but it is of course gracefully done, and it is as pleasantly diverting now as it was in 1754.
The singers here despatch it with due style and charm. The tragic scene falls to the capable and expressive Anne Sofie von Otter, who was recently a highly successful Cherubino at Covent Garden; Isabelle Poulenard sings her coloratura aria in a light, unaffected and agile fashion, and Gloria Banditelli is agreeably clear and rhythmic in her triple-time comic one, while Guy de Mey deploys his fluent tenor smoothly and lightly in his guise as the amorous shepherd. The style of the music is not of course 'reform', like Orfeo or Alceste; this work predates Gluck's first reform work by eight years—and in any case Gluck wrote far more music in the conventional Rococo idiom that prevailed in his day than he did in the new manner of his justly most famous works. So you will hear in Le cinesi plenty (to quote Gluck) of ''those abuses, introduced into opera by the mistaken vanity of singers or the too great complaisance of composers, which have so long disfigured Italian opera''. And in this context you may enjoy them without feeling guilty.
The music is charming, and is performed under Rene Jacobs with a real sense of style. The ornamentation is a model, and so is the pacing of the somewhat abundant recitative. The playing of the modest-sized orchestra is stylish and reasonably precise; bells in the Overture provide a touch of 'Chinese' exoticism. The recording is adequate but the LP surfaces were noisy.–Stanley Sadie
