This is an excellent reggae sampler. It should be obvious that everyone's first introduction to reggae should be Bob Marley's great LEGEND which is the reggae desert island disc of all time. That is the place to start for any introduction to reggae. This sampler is a good next step and includes classics from Jimmy Cliff, Burning Spear, Black Uhuru, Toots and the Maytals, and many others. The rhythm section for many of these tracks is the famous Sly and Robbie duo. Unfortunately missing from this collection is Peter Tosh. Tracks such as "Chill Out" and "Monday" by Black Uhuru were big urban hits in NYC in the early 80s. The recording on this disc of the Police song "Bed's too big…" by Sheila Hylton is alone worth the price of admission.
If you look this disc up on the All Music Guide site, they give it 4.5 stars which is a very strong recommendation.
The people who put this compilation together should be credited for assembling these excellent and diverse reggae tracks. The reggae world is quite fragmented and there aren't a lot of great packages that assemble such a high quality of recordings as this.
