The album, released to coincide with Black History Month in the USA, includes several premiere recordings: three piano Nocturnes and En attente du printemps for piano and percussion by Moroccan composer Nabil Benabdeljalil, as well as Ghana-born Fred Onovwerosuoke’s Five Kaleidoscopes for Piano, commissioned by Omordia in 2013.
These premieres are presented alongside Ghanaian composer Kwabena Nketia’s suite of 12 pedagogical pieces, African Pianism, from which the album takes its name, Christian Onyeji’s Ufie (Igbo Dance) – drawing on music from the Anambra part of Igbo land of Eastern Nigeria – David Earl’s Princess Rainbow from his 2012 suite Scenes from a South African Childhood, and Akin Euba’s Three Songs Without Words, an arrangement of three popular Nigerian songs from the Yoruba region of West Africa. Omordia opens the album with Nigerian-born composer Ayo Bankole’s Egun Variations, a set of variations based on an Egun song, Tona Nowe, which fuses Nigerian and European musical languages.
