Either you love it or you hate it: ‘Bolero’. For those who love it, it is a hypnotic buildup of almost unbearably sexy tension. For those who loathe it, it’s death by repetition. But before swearing it off, any listener should be aware of the speed issue. Ravel himself described the piece as “lasting seventeen minutes and consisting of ‘orchestral tissue without music’ – of one long, very gradual crescendo…” With such a clear-cut directive, is it possible that almost every recording made of this ‘greatest hit’ is wrong? In a word, yes.
I acquired this disc for a much more reasonable price than is currently being offered and was not disappointed. The sonic quality of this recording matches the glowing praise previous reviewers have given it. The performances are also first rate. The Bolero is worth acquiring for its unique slow but well maintained tempo and is a nice alternative to listen to. As to whether this CD contains the greatest recorded Ravel of all time you can make a strong case for the sonics but not necessarily for the performances. The Bolero lacks the pulse pounding drive and momentum that Munch/BSO achieved in `62 and Boulez NYPO did in '74. In fact the Sony SACD version of the Boulez NYPO runs a very close second in sonic splendor as well as being offered on the used market for less than a tenth of what this Mo-Fi cd is running for (Bolero / Valse / Rapsodie Espagnole / Alborada). I would also give a slight edge in performance to Boulez for the Rhapsodie Espagnole and the La Valse as well. If the Rhapsodie Espagnole is the main attraction for you, then Reiner and the CSO on XRCD are an unbeatable combination of recorded sound, atmospheric performance, and execution (The Reiner Sound). That being said, if you can acquire this disc for a price you deem reasonable, you will not be disappointed. But until it is offered at a such reasonable price the original Vox CDs being offered by third party vendors for under $10 are a very nice alternative (Ravel: Complete Works For Orchestra, Vol. 1,Ravel: Complete Works for Orchestra, Vol. 2). Their recorded sound is not multi-channel SACD but it is still very good.
