The works of Tomás Luis de Victoria are today an international paradigm of the Spanish Renaissance heritage. This master, born in Avila, rises like a standard-bearer from the huge spectrum of Spanish composers who carried the art of polyphony to its highest musical and liturgical significance.
The scant number of his compositions, if we adopt the usual comparisons with the influential stars from Ital1y (Palestrina) and Flanders (Lassus), only gain points from such comparisons: his music, even though less in quantity, is of the highest artistic worth in every sense and, although its historical relevance has prostrated itself before that of Palestrina, Victoria, as a composer, is in no way inferior to either the Roman or the Fleming.
If on a European level Victoria proves to be highly competitive, in Spain also his music bears comparison: both the elder Cristóbal de Morales and Francisco Guerrero attest to the flourishing genius of sixteenth century Spanish religious music. They are all well-known names but they are not the only ones. Nowadays we are familiar with a veritable legion of composers who worked throughout the sixteenth century, but Victoria, on his own merits, unquestionably commands this army of musicians. The present recording gives us a taste of his leadership and includes some of the most beautiful examples of contrapuntal writing, acknowledged homages to older masters and the varied nuances of which Victoria was capable, from the most passionate prayer to the most heartrending cry or the most devout worship of the Virgin Mary, widespread in Spain.
